Embracing Equity

Women Entrepreneurs at the Foundation of Many Local Businesses

Did you know more than half of Waterdown Village businesses are owned, co-owned or led by women? That’s 133+ reasons to celebrate International Women’s Day in a commercial area co-built and nourished by strong, inspiring female leaders. From health and wellness practitioners to lawyers, accountants, retail shop owners, restauranteurs and more…  women at the top of their game are leading this community forward.

Gender parity in local business ownership is not new in Waterdown. Women have been carving out a niche in their areas of expertise within the Business Improvement Area (BIA) district for several years now. That includes sole female proprietors, mother daughter teams, spousal partnerships, sister acts (including sisters from other mothers) and young, talented up and comers taking the leap into entrepreneurship.

Experts at juggling and balancing priorities, our women are killing it on the multi-tasking front. In small business, that can mean ordering, scheduling, managing people and money, being a content builder, marketing pro and/or customer-service expert. Visit a Waterdown Village and more than half the time it is likely the person greeting, serving, advising or treating you will be a female owner or manager wearing one of her many hats. And if the hat she’s wearing doesn’t fit what you need? She’s more than happy to point you straight to another local business. That’s because our sisterhood of female business owners are amazing and supportive and want to see the whole business community thrive.

As we head into March and the global celebration of gender equity, we encourage you to show your appreciation for local woman-led businesses. Give a shout out or personal thanks to acknowledge their contributions to our local economy. And if a local business has what you’re looking for – please Spend It Here. Keep the love in Waterdown Village.
